No. 20 Bobcats end season with loss in state tournament
FULTON – Starting pitcher Jarred Gates shut out the 20th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats for eight innings to lead the Mississippi Gulf Coast to a 9-0 victory Friday afternoon in the MACJC State Baseball Tournament.
The loss ends the Bobcats’ season at 31-19.
MGCCC improves to 28-18 and faced host Itawamba on Friday. Itawamba lost to Hinds 16-5 in seven innings in Friday’s second game. The winner of the Gulf Coast/Itawamba game must beat Hinds twice on Saturday at Roy Cresap Field to win the state championship.
With their win over JCJC, the Bulldogs also qualified for the Region 23 Tournament May 17-19 at LSU-Eunice.
Bulldogs 9, Bobcats 0
Gates kept the Bobcats off balance during his eight-inning stint. He struck out five, walked one and hit one. Neal Wineski pitched a perfect ninth for the Bulldogs.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Nick Boggs led off with a home run over the rightfield fence. Daniel Miles hit a two-run home run over the leftfield fence to highlight a three-run sixth. Gulf Coast added three unearned runs in the seventh and got a two-run double to deep left from Miles in the eighth.
Vito Perna singled twice and Benji Sullivan singled once for JCJC.
Perna (9-4) was the starter and took the loss. He went 5-1/3 innings, allowed four runs, seven hits, walked two and struck out four. Dylan Delaune went 1-2/3 innings, allowed three runs (none earned), four hits and walked one. Logan Riddell pitched the final inning, allowed two runs, two hits and walked two.

Bobcats sweep Delta, advance to state
The Jones County Junior College Bobcats will continue postseason play.
JCJC scored seven runs on just two hits in the third inning and went on to defeat the Mississippi Delta 11-3 on Saturday in Game 2 of their best-of-three series at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats had won the opener on Friday night, 6-1.
JCJC (31-17) will now head to the MACJC State Tournament May 10-12 at Itawamba. ICC swept East Central in their series. Hinds has also qualified for the state tournament after taking two from Northwest. The Mississippi Gulf Coast vs. Northeast series has been delayed by rain and was supposed to begin late Saturday night in Biloxi.
Mississippi Delta ends the season at 18-25-1.
Bobcats 11, Miss. Delta 3 — Starting pitcher Logan Riddell was excellent again for Jones.
Riddell went six innings, allowed five hits, walked three and struck out eight as he improved to 8-2.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second when Haden Ward and Darren Massey singled and D.J. Elkins got a run-scoring double.
But in the third, JCJC got walks to Jarrett Jenkins and Vito Perna and a fielder’s choice by Zach Fowler to load the bases. Chad Guice was then hit by a pitch, Cody Minter walked and Tilur Smith was hit by a pitch to score runs.
Jay Dedeaux then cleared the bases with a double and Jon Glaze followed with a hit to score a run. Dedeaux had six RBIs in the two-game series.
The Bobcats added three runs in the sixth when Glaze led off with a walk and scored on a double by Benji Sullivan. Vito Perna then followed with his second home run of the season to make it 10-1.
The Trojans got a couple of runs in the eighth as Ward and Elkins had run-scoring hits.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bobcats scored their final run when Perna walked and Fowler and Guice followed with singles.
Chase Stewart, Cody Brewer and Dylan Delaune each pitched an inning in relief. Stewart allowed one hit, Brewer gave up two runs, two hits and got a strikeout and Delaune gave up a hit.
Perna homered and singled for JCJC, while Glaze singled twice. Dedeaux and Sullivan doubled, while Fowler, Smith and Guice added singles.
Eric Brozovich started, went 2 2/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed seven runs, four hits, walked five and hit two. Dalton DeLoach pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed one hit and recorded a strikeout. Felix Fuentes went 3 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, four hits, walked three and struck out one. Winn Roark pitched 1/3 of an inning.
Elkins had three singles for MDCC, while Trey Keyes had two singles. Brad Helton, Ward, Aaron Woodard and Julian Beamon also had singles.

Perna, Dedeaux stop MDCC, 6-1
ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College received a strong starting pitching performance from Vito Perna and three RBIs from Jay Dedeaux en route to a 6-1 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College here Friday night at Community Bank Park.
The win gives JCJC a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series of the opening round of the MACJC state playoffs.
Game 2 will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a third game, if necessary, to follow after Game 2. The Bobcats are now 30-17 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 18-24-1.
Bobcats 6, Miss. Delta 1 — JCJC took the lead in the second inning when Chad Guice and Cody Minter led off with singles. Tilur Smith sacrificed the runners and Dedeaux then delivered a two-run single to center.
It stayed that way until the sixth when the Bobcats broke through for four runs.
Minter hit a one-out double to the gap in right-center and Smith drew a walk. Dedeaux then came through with another RBI single to make it 3-0.
Jon Glaze then reached on a fielder’s choice when the Trojans tried to make a play on courtesy runner Zach Allen at second base. Allen was safe and Smith was able to score on the play.
Jarrett Jenkins then flied out to deep right, but Allen was able to tag up and go to third. Glaze then went halfway between first and second and Allen broke for the plate. The Trojans threw home, but it was too late as Allen scored and Glaze ended up at second on the double steal.
Benji Sullivan then scored Glaze with an RBI single.
MDCC got on the board in the eighth when Blake Palasini reached on a two-out, two-base error. After a wild pitch, Trey Keys singled home the run.
Perna went 7-2/3 innings, allowed an unearned run, six hits, struck out six and walked one. He improves to 9-3 on the season. Jeremy Kidd went the final 1 1/3 innings and retired all four batters he faced.
Minter doubled and singled for JCJC, while Dedeaux had two singles. Sullivan, Perna, Zac Fowler and Guice had singles.
Jonathan Parker started and took the loss for MDCC. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowed six runs, seven hits and struck out two. Turner Neely went the final 2 1/3 innings, gave up one hit and struck out one.
Keys had two singles for MDCC, while D.J. Elkins doubled. Lee Cole, Cody Marks and Haden Ward each singled.
