Three-car crash on I-59 injures 3
A three-car crash on Interstate 59 sent three people to the hospital and slowed down traffic for about an hour as rescue workers tended to the injured and cleared the wreckage late Tuesday morning.
Penny Parnell of Laurel was in a Yukon XL with her 17-year-old stepson and 2-year-old daughter when traffic slowed down abruptly in front of her, she told investigating officer Ken Williams of the Laurel Police Department. She then veered to the left lane and crashed into a Ford Focus. The impact spun the smaller car around and crushed its rear end and the SUV hit a steel bridge rail. Three women in the car were transported by EmServ ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
“I’m just thankful we all made it out with our lives,” Parnell, who turns 26 on Wednesday, said as she held her toddler. “I hope everyone is OK. I’m worried about them.”
A third vehicle, a Toyota Four-Runner, was also involved up ahead of the vehicles that had more serious damage. Witnesses and those involved in the crash said that traffic had allowed down because a Mississippi Department of Transportation mower was cutting crass on the side of the median. The accident happened just in the southbound lane, just south of Exit 93 in Laurel.
The Laurel Fire Department and the Mississippi Highway Patrol were also on the scene.
Traffic was backed up for several miles and diverted to Highway 11 for almost an hour before one lane of the interstate was opened.
